At the end of this guide you will have a rooted droid running sapphire
This
MUST be done in windows
there are several different methods for rooting the droid, i will attempt to make this the most straight forward way possible, it is not the only way to root the droid but i am hoping this is the easiest.
To download the drivers you will need to create an account with Motorola and log-in
i am providing links to Motorola's download section so that the latest drivers will always be available

Download all of the files above including the 32-bit OR 64-bit Motorola USB Drivers.
Install RSDLite 4.6 AND the 32-bit or 64-bit Motorola USB Drivers (Depends on your system most will need 32-bit some will need 64-bit)
Connect your phone to USB and turn it off then while your phone is booting hold up on the DPAD.
Run RSD Lite 4.6 (as Administrator if you have Vista or Win7) If you are using XP you may not need to run as Administrator.
Click the … next to the filename box and browse to where you saved the .sbf file and double click the .sbf file.
Hit start and below it should give you completion progress.
Once your phone is done being flashed (It may take a while so don't unplug it) it will reboot and you will be back at stock 2.0.1 no root.
DO NOT UNPLUG YOUR PHONE DURING THE .SBF FLASH PROCESS! DOING SO WILL BRICK YOUR PHONE PERMANENTLY BEYOND EVEN VERIZON'S ABILITY TO REPAIR
Once the Flashing of the .SBF is finished, Mount the phone's SDcard.
Rename the file “rename-to-update.zip” to “update.zip”(be careful that you aren't renaming it update.zip.zip)
Copy the file “update.zip” and the sapphire rom file to the root of your SDCard
Turn off your phone, on restart hold down the “x” key.
Once the triangle with the exclamation point appears press up on the volume and the camera button together, to make the recovery menu appear.
Choose the option to apply sdcard:update.zip, congratulations you now have root!
go to the market, install RoMManager(free or paid your choice)
open RoMManager, any boxes that pop up will ask you to allow privileges select the check box and press “allow”
Choose the option “Flash ClockworkMod Recovery”
Once Flashing is complete, choose option “Install ROM from SDCard”
Scroll to the bottom of the list that pops up, choose the Sapphire Rom file.
Congratulations you now have now upgraded your phone back to, Android 2.1 build ESE81 Sapphire ROM
as soon as 2.2 FROYO Source is available the accompanying Sapphire Rom will be available as well
